Employer's Life

Interview with Haddon Training Apprentice Employer, Sam Bloor

We recently caught up with Aligned Rider - Sam Bloor, a BHS PT/ UKCCL2 coach, Equipilates Biomechanics Trainer and British Dressage List 4 judge and all-round super apprentice employer!

Sam runs a successful schooling livery and is currently competing British Dressage at FEI Intermediate I level.

Keep reading to find out why Sam supports learners and employs apprentices.

Why would you recommend that other employers support apprentice training in their businesses?

"Not only is it a productive and cost-effective way to expand your team, but you can be assured that your work force is up-to-date with current thoughts and practises within your industry. Apprentices are using their skills day in and day out, making it a great way to create a technically and practically sound work force that you, as an employer, have been able to shape to suit your business."

How to you make sure that your apprentice is supported, not only in their work Tasks, but mentally too?

"Undoubtedly working in the equine industry can be tough, especially through the winter.

I have found that flexible working hours have been beneficial, such as working a shorter day when the conditions have been too bad and the horses have to take the day off from exercise.

Then, as conditions improve, we put the hours back in - catching up on the tasks that we felt weren’t necessary in the freezing cold, like tack cleaning in -7 degrees!"

I also have a monthly lunch time catch up, where I can check in with my apprentice. I like to make sure they are still happy with their role and to see if there are any areas in which I can offer more support.

What made you join the EEA?

"I joined the EEA on the recommendation of Haddon Training, and I’m so pleased that I did!

The EEA offer great support to employers within the equine industry as there are many tools available on the platform. Through the website I also created my staff handbook, health and safety police’s and risk assessments. There’s a heap of helpful information, contacts and advice you can pick up through the EEA too."

The contract creator has been helpful not only for my employee contracts, but my livery contracts too.
