Under the Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 all employers are required to assess risks to their employees.

The Facts

  1. What is a Risk Assessment?

    A risk assessment is a document that helps you to identify and manage the risks in your establishment.

    It will evaluate the dangers and help you to decide on control measures to reasonably prevent any risk of harm to
    your employees.

  2. What is the legislation?

    The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (MHSWR) requires employers and the self-employed to carry out risk assessments.

    The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 places a duty on employers to protect the health and safety of their employees.

  3. Do they have to be written down?

    Risk assessments must be written down if you have five or more employees in your workplace.

    It's recommended to write down risk assessments even if you have fewer employees for best practice and to protect your business in the case of an accident.

    You should share your risk assessments with your employees, and review and update them as and when necessary.

  4. Can I write it myself?

    Yes you can, however it is not advised. In the event of any accidents on your yard or workplace, you will need a document that protects you and your business.
