The Equestrian Employers Association (EEA) is the organisation for you if you employ staff in the equestrian industry.

Some functionality of the website is not currently available due to technical difficulties. We're working on fixing the issue.

Employer's Life

What else do I need?

Employing staff can feel like a minefield.

The Equestrian Employers Association was formed to support anyone who employs equestrian staff or manages a yard and runs a business in the equestrian industry.

With the bespoke tools, advice and guidance, your membership can help you to run your business legally and profitably.

It is currently  ‘Give Your Staff A Contract Week’....as well as having a written statement of employment terms, what else is the minimum that you need?

A Written Statement of Employment Terms

Providing a written contract is a legal requirement and must be done within two months of the start of employment. It outlines the terms of employment, for example salary, holidays and working hours and gives both the employer and employee protection.

You can use the Equestrian Employers Association Contract Creator to create bespoke employment contracts for all your team in five easy steps. This is free for all Equestrian Employer Association members.

Nb. If your employee has been with you longer than two months and you haven’t provided one yet you still need to provide one. Failing to provide one can result in a fine.

Payslips

Paying at least the National Minimum Wage is the law (find out more here). It is essential that you provide payslips which act as written proof of what has been paid. If you are unsure and need some help have a look at our pension and payroll providers.

Staff Handbook

Issuing a full staff handbook with additional policies – such as equal opportunities, absence management and social media policies – has a number of benefits.

For example, it is one way that an employer can clearly set out the standard of conduct which is expected from its staff, it provides guidance to managers in terms of how to handle a particular situation, such as sickness absence, and ensures that all staff are treated in the same way.

It is a legal requirement under the Employment Rights Act 1996 to provide details of your disciplinary and grievance procedures to your employees.

EEA members can use the Staff Handbook Creator to create a bespoke handbook for free.

Insurance policies

As a business owner you may need Liability Insurance, Personal Accident Insurance and Property Insurance.

The EEA we have partnered up with KBIS British Equestrian Insurance to provide our members with access to specialist insurance policies at a preferential rate. Find out more here.

The Code of Good Employment

In addition to providing these basic requirements you can also have a look at the Code of Good Employment. This is a voluntary code which covers making it legal, paying correctly, good management and providing a safe workplace.

You can find out more about the code and how to sign up here.

Don’t forget that as a EEA member you have access to an employer’s helpline and a legal helpline.

We are here to support you every step of the way.
