We are very lucky to have both indoor and outdoor schools, stabling for 50 horses that are all rubber matted and have automatic water drinkers as well as a 5 horse-walker, 2 hot wash bays and solariums. All Equine students also use our Dressage simulator.

The equestrian centre has 30 acres of grazing that is split into smaller paddocks and lots of beautiful hacking available.

The college has a range of horses to help build the riders skills and confidence depending on their level. Students ride regularly and have the opportunity to compete the college horses in a range of disciplines in students shows. We are also a BHS exam centre so can support you in taking these additional qualifications.

All students undertake yard duties which include normal horse care tasks such as feeding, mucking out, grooming and also clipping throughout the winter. As part of the duty team you will also have the opportunity to learn supervisory skills, getting you ready for a career with horses.

We often have competitions at weekends in our Equestrian Centre so students will also have the opportunity to get involved with these. You could learn to be a steward, work with a course builder or write for a dressage judge.

Students enjoy a varied curriculum designed in conjunction with equine employers. You’ll be learning from experienced and well qualified staff, who are there to ensure you reach your full potential. Our students have achieved 100% pass rate for three years in a row!

The National Stud’s Level 3 Stud Management and Sales Consignment course is a 28 week residential programme starting in September.  It provides learners with the opportunity to prepare bloodstock for, and attend, the sales, handle a range of bloodstock, learn how to foal down and how to assist in the covering shed with an exciting roster of stallions.

The Level 1 and 2 Thoroughbred Industry Access course is a 16 week residential programme starting in May.  It offers an introduction to stud work for those with no or generic equine experience and covers the basics of equine husbandry and handling.

Moulton’s equestrian centre has an up-to-date industry standard therapy suite with an aqua treadmill, a swimming lane, a cold water spa and a solarium, all under one roof – not to mention an on-site equine veterinary practice.

Our Pitsford site is an approved British Horse Society training and examination centre. We have stabling for up to 60 horses, a 60 x 40-metre indoor riding area with spectator seating and judges’ area, two side-by-side outdoor arenas (60 x 25 metres and 40 x 20 metres) and a schooling field for novice horses and riders, plus various hacking routes throughout the college’s 1,150 acre estate.

This scope makes Moulton a great host for affiliated British Dressage and British Show Jumping competitions, as well as many Riding Club events and unaffiliated competitions.

The college has its own established dressage and show jumping academy, and students compete in the events run at the college.

Whether you are interested in Equine Nutrition, Coaching or Rehabilitation there is something for everyone at SMB College Group. We will give you the relevant knowledge, understanding and practical skills necessary to be career ready at the end of your study programme. All aspects of the courses are delivered at our Brooksby campus, where you can access a range of horses and state-of-the-art facilities, such as the Brooksby Equine Rehabilitation Centre.

 

We are a British Horse Society Approved Training Centre, Riding Centre and Facility Centre and we run training and exams throughout the year. More recently, the Equestrian Centre at our Brooksby Campus has become an Accessibility Mark accredited centre for the RDA (Riding for the Disabled Association)– providing students with the tools to teach disabled riders when they embark on their equestrian coaching careers.  

Positioned in the heart of Leicestershire’s equestrian community, we attract students from all over the UK. Our courses are timetabled so that students experience a multi-dimensional approach to their study including dissections, practical demonstrations, work experience, lectures, charity competitions and much, much more. We also take advantage of our location by going on course-relevant trips such as visiting Leicester Races, Vale View Competition Centre, Blue Cross, Newmarket, and Burghley Horse Trials.  

We have an exceptional teaching team who have knowledge in a variety of specialisms from rehabilitation and massage to equine nutrition, coaching and events management. Our area also has high-quality employability links with industry specialists such as international eventers and showjumpers, carriage drivers, racing yards and riding schools supporting our students’ progress into employment. 

SMB College Group is a specialist Further and Higher Education college situated in the heart of Leicestershire. It was formed in 2020 from the merger of Brooksby Melton College and Stephenson College and now boasts three campuses across Leicestershire – Stephenson in Coalville, Brooksby in the Leicestershire countryside, and Melton in Melton Mowbray town centre.

FE Courses:  

SMB College Group’s Brooksby Campus offers Further Education Equine courses providing a unique learning experience, with a focus on preparing equestrians for future success within the industry, whichever area they may choose to work in. 

Students benefit from expert tuition from event riders, dressage judges, a sports massage therapist, and highly qualified and experienced coaches. 

We offer our students a range of equine courses, including Level 2 Equine Technical Skills with Behaviour or Equitation (Riding) and Level 3 Equestrian Professional Skills with Business or Coaching. 

We are committed to developing the skills and knowledge of our students to a high level, frequently exceeding the increasing requirements of employers in the industry. Students will also take part in work experience hours to gain an understanding of the industry in a professional environment, giving them the opportunity to build expert links within the industry. 

British Horse Society Training is available for all our students as well as other extra-curricular activities to supplement and enrich their course. This includes the potential to try out for the Equine Squad team and compete against other colleges; join us on trips to feed companies, rescue centres, racecourses, competition centres and international events; and to take part in our own student shows run seasonally throughout the year.

HE Courses:  

SMB College Group’s Brooksby Campus offers FdSc Equine Performance with Business, FdSc and BSc Equine Performance with Coaching, and FdSc and BSc Equine Performance with Rehabilitation. 

If you want to study somewhere where you will be using the state-of-the-art equipment we have, gaining more training and opportunities to gain qualifications (for example RDA coaching qualifications and BHS stage exams) in addition to your degree in a friendly environment - consider us. 

Our degrees are accredited by the University of East Anglia (UEA), giving students opportunities to increase knowledge and understanding of the equine athlete and the equestrian industry, through a mixture of practicals, formal lectures and seminars. The college has a multitude of industry links, integrating work-based learning with higher education and the courses are suitable for both students planning to work with horses, and for students looking for a rounded graduate education in interesting and challenging subject areas. 

The courses offer significant scientific modules, in order to give graduates a multifaceted programme of study, ensuring they reach the level of academia and understanding often asked for in graduate job roles. The small class sizes and impressive facilities allow the students more targeted support, to guide them in their studies and ensure they are fully industry ready before moving into their chosen career; whether this is in rehabilitation, coaching, business, or something more laboratory-based. Students benefit from expert tuition from event riders, dressage judges, a sports massage therapist and highly qualified and experienced coaches and lecturers giving students the opportunity to build professional industry links and networking opportunities. 

The faculty work in collaboration with associations such as the Riding for Disabled Association, the British Horse Society and experts associated with the Water Treadmill throughout the UK, Coaches, Rehabilitation & Nutritionist to ensure the programmes really are considering what the current labour market needs in this field. Therefore, students can leave us with further qualifications and skill bases to aid in their future careers. 

Students will have the opportunity to take part in professional external lectures from experts within the industry, recently including a Sports Psychologist, a McTimoney Chiropractor and Nutritional experts.
